Virginia P Flournoy

October 30, 1937 ~ March 29, 2024 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Tribute

Virginia Mary Phillips was born October 30, 1937, in Caroline County Virginia on a farm near the Delos Post Office (which is now part of Fort AP Hill) passed peacefully at the age of 86.  She was the oldest of three children born to James William and Theresa Phillips.  Although she loved being a snowbird in Florida’s Panhandle for the last 2 decades or so, she lived most of her life in Hanover County Virginia.

Virginia was a strong supporter of the Salvation Army’s Christmas Teddy Bear and Doll program as she spent countless hours over the years dedicated to making outfits for those treasured children’s gifts.  She belonged to several quilt guilds in both Hanover and Okaloosa Counties.  Even though she would always say she was a crafter not a quilter, she designed and made several quilts.  She had a keen eye for design, whether for crafting or quilting.  Virginia also enjoyed painting and sewing most of her adult life, even making her own wedding dress which had countless yards of heavy satin.  There was always time for sharing her talents with those people interested in learning. A little-known fact was that she was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying her Cessna 150 the best.  She also enjoyed camping, boating and fishing in her younger adult years (as long as she was near and not “in” the water).  Over the years, when she wasn’t crafting, she worked for the Federal Reserve Bank, the City of Richmond and various sales jobs.  She had a Real Estate license and sold Mary Kay, Avon and Christmas Around the World.

Virginia is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert A Flournoy (they met at Barton Heights Baptist Church at a teen service in 1956 and the rest is history!).  Also surviving is her sister, Anne-Callis Phillips Ritter (Bill) of Dale City, Virginia, Annie Mae Jones and James E Bullock (cousins), nieces:  Joan, Julie, Wanda, Tara Lynn, Kayla, Debbie, Cindy and Jennifer and nephews: William R and William F. and multiple great nieces and nephews.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents James William Phillips, Jr and Christina Theresa Eipp (maiden name), James William Phillips III (brother), James William Phillips IV (nephew), her three half-sisters (Jeannette, Mary Alice and Betty Jane), Birdie Bullock, and Lillian Mills (Aunts), Rowe Phillips (Uncle), John Bullock (cousin), Frances Flournoy (sister-in-law) and Alan Beldyk (brother-in-law).

Virginia will be greatly missed but she was ready to meet her Lord and Savior and passed while listening to the song Precious Lord, Take My Hand.  Don’t cry for me today for it’s to home I’ll Fly Away.

A Visitation will be held on Monday, April 8, 2024 at 10:00am with Funeral Service to follow at Rosemont Baptist Church.
