Colonel Jack Howard Harper, Jr., USAF (Retired) passed away peacefully in his home on Sept 7 2019; entering into eternal rest with the Lord, surrounded by loving family and friends. He was born in Monroe, LA to Jack H. Harper Sr. and Louise Simpson Harper on July 17, 1930.


Upon earning a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Mississippi State University in 1952 he married his college sweetheart “Bunkey”, and having completed US AFROTC training he entered the USAF as a Second Lt.. Colonel Harper proudly served his country for over 24 years. During his time of service he flew in Vietnam as a fighter pilot and reconnaissance pilot. He served at numerous posts in Europe and the US and held various positions including Flight Instructor, Flight Commander, Wing Commander and Base Commander. Some of his decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 20 Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritus Service Medal, and Bronze Star Medal.
Following retirement, Jack spent time traveling with Bunkey visiting family and friends and participating in coin shows. He was an active member of the Order of Daedalians, owned Grey Eagle Coins and he was a supporter of his local Niceville community. Jack made many lifelong friends through all of his endeavors and is remembered for always having a smile.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Martha Burgoyne (Bunkey); survived by sister, Dale Harper Stuckey; brother in law, Caleb Burgoyne (Carolyn); nieces Robin Jones, Bonita Jones Linnemeyer, Connie Burgoyne Gaskill (Jef); nephews Robert Williams, Joe Burgoyne (Elena), John Burgoyne; 7 great nieces and nephews; 2 great great nephews and several cousins.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, September 15 at 4pm, McLaughlin Twin Cities Funeral Home, Niceville, FL. Internment Monday, September 16 at 12:00, Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, FL. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Hope For the Warriors or Hire Heroes USA.
